LAN - Local Area Network. See also Network. Laser Printer - A type of printer, that when powdered toner ink is passed close to the paper a beam of laser light excites the toner onto the surface of the paper. The paper is then passed through a heating roller to bond the toner onto the paper surface. If the paper is not passed through the heating roller, the powdered toner will detach itself easily from the paper. Link - A link is a reference to a Internet (or intranet) web address, or URL. See also Internet, Intranet and URL. Linking - An OLE method of inserting an object into a container application's document. A linked object does not include the object's native data. Instead, it includes a reference to both the server application and the original data. If the original data changes, the linked object is seen to be updated automatically. See also OLE, Client/Server, and Data. Linux - Linux is a free UNIX type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Linux is an independent POSIX implementation of the Open Source Development Model and includes true multitasking, memory management, TCP/IP networking, and other features consistent with UNIX type systems. See also UNIX, multitasking, memory, network and TCP/IP. Local Resource - Any document, file or peripheral attached to your computer or held on its hard disk. See also File, Peripheral and Hard Disk. Logging Off - Also known as logging out. The process of saying "Good Bye" to a computer so that it knows that you no longer need its service and can ignore any further requests from you until you log back in again. Some secure computer systems will note in a log that you have logged off. See also Logging On. Logging On - Also known as logging in. The process of identifying oneself to a computer. The process may involve a secret password or PIN (Personal Identification Number), known only to you and the computer. At this point the computer may be set-up to start programs and assign access permissions to data. It is known as logging on because some computer systems that need to be secure will take a log of your access. See also Permissions. Long - A data type that is twice the size of an integer and can represent whole numbers, i.e. it cannot hold a fractional part, for example 78042. As a 32bit number, it can have a range 0 to 4294967295, or -2147483648 to +2147483647 if the most significant bit represents the sign. See also Data Types and Single. LPT - Line Printer. This is usually the parallel port, the port with a 25 pin D-type connector on the rear of the computer. Early computers communicated with the printer via the serial ports until the advent of cheaper parallel ports becoming available. The printer data cable has a 25 pin D-type connector at one end and a special Centronics type connector at the other. See also Parallel Port and Serial Port. |
